Ever since the first humans came to Denmark, we have used the watercourses to our advantage. Watercourses have been straightened to improve drainage of the surrounding fields, and in recent decades, several watercourses have been returned to their original windings and bends to the benefit of the environment. However, weeds still have to be cut in many Danish watercourses to allow the water to drain from the fields, ensuring agricultural interests. Given increased requirements for diversified flora and wildlife in and along the watercourses, the watercourse management practised today in many locations is carried out carefully by trained waterway operatives. HedeDanmark a/s offers watercourse management for municipalities and regions throughout Denmark. Our some 100 trained waterway operatives maintain more than 3,000 km of watercourses a year.
